along with Ernest Shackleton and Dr. Edward Wilson, made a run to the south across the Great Ice Barrier.

The journey had been difficult, although the men

had set a farthest south record. Scott and his team had used dogs with limited success, mainly

due to their lack of training with them. The three men had suffered from scurvy, in particular

Shackleton, and he was lucky to have made it back to Discovery alive. Upon returning from their run south,

Scott found the discovery iced in,

and it was clear she would not be leaving that summer.

That meant another year in Antarctica.
