It's time to talk about horror heroes,

or rather anti-heroes.

It started in the teens, the 19 teens,

with monsters that crept across the silver screen

before they could speak.

Lon Cheney was the first movie star identified almost exclusively

with the horror genre.

As the titular character in the hunchback of Notre Dame,

the phantom of the opera, and numerous other such memorable roles,

all of which he created his own makeup for,

his popularity as a player of monsters was so strong

that there was a common joke among the populace.
