Summary

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!

A bonus treat this Friday as Pip is joined by writer of Channel 4’s new prison drama ‘Screw’, ROB WILLIAMS!

Rob of course has worked on a great amount of productions and works, but the focus this episode is the series Screw, and how it all formulated including the development and so on. The synopsis for Screw reads: “This is prison as never seen before – the uncensored, shocking and often darkly funny reality of life as a prison officer in an all-male prison in 21st century Britain” - and if that triggers your interests then this will be a perfect episode as Pip and writer Rob get deep into the mechanics and background of it all. A wide ranging chat which covers dystopian overload, teaching in prison, the lack of prison officer based shows, representation, being defined by the worst moment of your life, long running shows and the UK television framework, writing as part of a well oiled machine, writing to hooks and holding attention, Eastenders, Casualty, and loads more which will appeal to basically anyone with an interest in broadcast media. ENJOY!

As you guys know, I rarely pass up the opportunity to sit down with a writer, a director, a creator, an actor, any of these things that I'm clearly a nerd for and I had the chance to sit down with a show creator.

0:25.9

Rob Williams to discuss anything and everything about the show. So I made the most of that and you get a little bonus episode. So let's get on with it.

0:35.9

This is a bonus episode of the Distraction Pieces podcast with Rob Williams.

1:01.3

Right. I'm here today with Rob Williams, the creator of Screw. How are you, sir, in these in these strange times?

1:08.7

Strange indeed. I'm very well. Thank you. Delighted to be talking to you.

1:13.9

It's good. Good. Good. It's a weird time for writers of fiction, I think, because if you're looking at pandemics, if you're looking at government scandals, it's all becoming more ridiculous than that.

1:28.2

Then you could write. So do you find kind of inspirational or damnation in these situations?

1:34.6

It's hard, isn't it? I wouldn't want to be a satirist at this point, I think. I mean, you've gotten nothing left, have you?

1:40.0

It's like every single day, something new comes up and you just go, I would never have thought of that.

1:45.0

Yeah. And it's real. And I saw a tweet actually this morning that said, is it coincidence that Black Mirror hasn't been made for a while?

1:51.4

I don't just have to, which is like, I love that show. Yeah. I genuinely think I've seen Amanda Inouch talk about easy enough on satire because in America and the UK, he just couldn't do anything.

2:03.2

And I'm sure it is the same for Charlie Brooker. It is. Where do you go with the ridiculousness of it?

2:10.2

He almost seems like, he almost seems like he predicted it all, doesn't it? Some other stuff from a few years ago.

2:15.2

I know, I mean, I got it. It's funny, isn't it? Because in the years leading up to this sort of more with that word, certainly the last 12, sort of two years, I guess, there has been a bit of a fashion for this dystopic drama and fiction, actually.

2:31.6

And I think, and that will never go away, I think, probably, but I also do think that, I mean, I suppose the commission is really, they're not really desperate for it at the moment.

2:41.8

I think I think a lot of people just want to think about something else.

2:46.0

I had a script that me and I made slave gover and we were really like, it's one of the first things I've done that we were like, this could be like the best show ever.

2:55.6

Like this is amazing. And everyone we went to was like, we've already got a dystopian story on our slate. It's kind of is, it's already covered.

3:04.6

And a few of those channels, I'm sure, we're referring to the news. But.

3:08.1

Right. The story is the story of my life. It's the, yeah, I think that's right.

3:12.4

And the thing we did did, I was just also done a show for Apple TV. And, you know, I think I think a lot of us talk about, you know, do we have people wearing masks?
