Summary

Talking points: childhood, trauma, foster care, relationships We all know that poverty can have a massive impact on a child's future well-being, sense of self, attachment style, and more. Foster children face equally (if not more) significant challenges. Rob Henderson, author of the incredibly powerful book, "Troubled", explains some of what happens. Team, I strongly recommend this one if you're interested at all in childhood trauma, how attachment develops, the apparent demonization of young men, absent fathers, and of course, Rob's book. Seriously could NOT stop reading it. (00:00:00) - Intro (00:06:54)- How Rob approached writing such a profound book—and why (00:14:27) - What’s the foster-care system like in America? (00:23:01) - How does the foster-care system shape a child’s perspective on relationships? (00:36:01) - How Rob found a sense of belonging (00:39:23) - How did Rob repair or build relationships with men? (00:46:06) - Rob’s take on how absent fathers impact children (00:51:33) - On “Young Male Syndrome” and the limits of attachment (01:03:40) - How do dating apps impact attachment, and how Rob worked on healing his own attachment style Rob Henderson grew up in foster homes across California, and is a writer on human nature, psychology, social class, TV shows, movies, political and social divisions, and more. He's perhaps most known for pioneering the concept of "luxury beliefs," a term he coined to describe a new way of understanding the American status system. After working as a busboy, a dishwasher, and supermarket bagger, he joined the Air Force at the age of 17, stationed mostly in Europe and deployed in the Middle East. Once described as “self-made” by the New York Times, Henderson obtained a B.S. in Psychology from Yale (thanks to the G.I. Bill) and a Ph.D. in Psychology from the University of Cambridge (St. Catharine’s College), where I studied as a Gates Cambridge Scholar. He is a founding faculty fellow at UATX and a columnist at The Free Press, and have written for the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, and the Boston Globe, among other outlets. I've been doing these weekends for seven or eight years now, and they always sell out and they

0:20.8

always sell out pretty quickly. But one of the big questions that I get is what happens at these

0:24.8

weekends, because there's a little bit of mystery around the weekends. And what I can say is a few

0:29.6

things. Number one, these weekends are the place for you to do deep interpersonal, in person

0:35.9

work in nature in a beautiful setting, a beautiful environment

0:39.6

where everything's provided and taken care of for you. And you get to do that work with a really

0:44.5

incredible group of men who are willing and wanting to do that work as well. So you get a group

0:51.3

of like-minded men that oftentimes become lifelong friends. What I've

0:55.2

seen from past weekends is that guys create some incredibly, incredibly deep bonds and relationships

1:00.9

to the point where they have new men that they are exploring life with. We take you through

1:05.9

an initiation process meant to help you confront and challenge the part of your life and the part of yourself

1:13.5

that has been holding you back, whether that's been holding you back from the type of relationship

1:18.1

that you want or sex life that you want or intimacy or finances or body or confidence that

1:23.4

you want. We take you and the other men on a journey that allows you to confront the part

1:29.1

of yourself that has been holding you back in your life.

1:31.8

And so a lot of men come to these weekends ready for change, ready for transformation,

1:37.3

and we put you through the paces.

1:39.1

So we give you tools, we give you resources, we walk you through real practices that you can take home with you and do on the other side of the weekend so that you are resourced when you leave the weekend, not just with a group of men that are going to be supporting you and holding you accountable, but also with real practical knowledge and tools and resources that you can use on a daily basis

to help you transform your life. So head on over, mantops.com. You can check out the
