Good morning and welcome to the Independent Republic of Mike Graham right here on Talk Radio.

We're in the midst of a cold snap.

Parts of the country have even had their first snowfall of winter.

But there's nothing chillier at the moment

than the diplomatic relations between the UK government and the United Arab Emirates. This

morning, British PhD student Matthew Hedges, is currently languishing in a Dubai prison, having

been sentenced to a life term for spy. The Essex native might have been naive to think that

doing a thesis on military security inside the UAE after the hour of spring, but he surely

doesn't deserve such harsh treatment. On the other hand, calls for diplomatic ties to be severed and

sanctions imposed by Jeremy Hunt, the Foreign Secretary, are surely way over the top as well.

Why should we expect every other nation in the world to do what we tell them? Why should we expect

every other government to behave as we do in the West? And what on earth gives us the right to dictate domestic policy to sovereign states around
