Summary
After Kyle Rittenhouse was acquitted after shooting dead two men and injuring another at a Black Lives Matter protest, the US right are triumphant. What does this mean now: for right-wing vigilantes and for progressive protesters? How would the US justice system have judged a person of colour in the same circumstances, and what does this tell us about white supremacy?
We're joined by Benjamin Dixon, Dr. Cynthia Miller-Idriss, Pat Blanchard and Wajahat Ali .

| 0:00.0 | Hello, hello, hello. Welcome to a very, very special show, very lucky to have guests joining us live from the United States. |
| 0:07.0 | You've had to get up very, very early over the Atlantic. We're talking today about the fallout of the Kyle Rittenhouse verdict. |
| 0:15.0 | Now, as many of you will know, on Friday, Kyle Rittenhouse was found not guilty by a nearly all-white jury on five counts that included, of course, homicide and reckless endangerment. |
| 0:28.0 | Now, those killings took place last August during unrest in Wisconsin, in which Rittenhouse, who took it upon himself to cross the border from where he's fallen, Illinois, to patrol the streets after protests over the police shooting of Jacob Blake. |
| 0:43.0 | He shot dead two men with an AR-15-style rifle. Now, this was the moment when the verdict was announced. |
| 0:53.0 | Now, of course, there's lots of issues to talk about right here. For many, of course, outside the United States, just as a basic point, US gun laws continue to be a source of huge bafflemen. |
| 1:21.0 | But the, obviously, another very basic question. How would the American justice system have treated a black man, a young black man, in comparable circumstances? |
| 1:32.0 | The political implications can best be summed up by who exactly is most loudly celebrating the verdict. |
| 1:42.0 | Now, far right groups across the United States are jubilant. They are extremely triumphant. They're proud boys. Many of you will know, of course, that far right extremist group over in the United States, calling for the stacking up of bodies like cordwood after the Rittenhouse verdict. |
| 1:59.0 | Now, during the trial itself, Republican senators cheered Rittenhouse on, and indeed even offered to employ him. |
| 2:09.0 | Thank you for your advocacy for Kyle Rittenhouse. He is not guilty. He deserves a not guilty verdict, and I sure hope he gets it because, you know what, Kyle Rittenhouse would probably make a pretty good congressional intern. |
| 2:22.0 | We may reach out to him and see if he'd be interested in helping the country in additional ways. |
| 2:30.0 | Now, unsurprisingly, Donald Trump has joined those celebrating the verdict. |
| 2:35.0 | I think that it was a great decision. I was surprised it had to go this far. Somebody should have ended it earlier, and frankly, the case should have never been brought. |
| 2:45.0 | It was prosecutorial misconduct, in my opinion, and there's plenty of it going on in this country right now. That was disgraceful. |
| 2:53.0 | So Biden's public statement was, I suppose, unsurprising. Let's just hear what he said. |
| 3:07.0 | In a subsequent statement, though, he said while the verdict can show, sir, will leave many Americans feeling angry and concerned. |
| 3:14.0 | By self-included, we must acknowledge that majority is spoken. So I suppose carefully treading a certain line there. We'll talk about that later. |
| 3:24.0 | Now, there's been protests across the United States following the verdict, including in Brooklyn, New York. |
| 3:32.0 | The former football quarterback, and civil rights activist Colin Copernick, said we just witnessed a system built on white supremacy, validate the terrorist acts of a white supremacist. |
| 3:56.0 | This only for the validates the need to abolish our current system, white supremacy cannot be formed. |
| 4:04.0 | Now, as I said, we've got four brilliant guests who are going to be talking over the verdict and the implications just quickly as ever. |
