Each week on the BBC World Service, I look at one of the biggest issues in the news.

This time, it's rising tension between the West and Russia.

The answers I don't know, I think we have to be on our guard and I think we have to make

sure that deterrence prevails.

This is General Sennit Carter.

He's the head of the British Armed Forces. He'd been asked if Russia's going to war

with Ukraine.

Now, the West doesn't know what Vladimir Putin will do next, but it knows there's growing

tension in Eastern Europe.

There's the migrant crisis on the Belarus-Poland border.

There's a major build-up of Russian troops on the border with Ukraine.

And the US is watching his Pentagon spokesperson, John Kirby.

We do continue to see unusual military activity and concentration of forces in Russia.

But near Ukrainian borders, and that remains concerning to us.

Or there's the assessment of Lithuania about 100 kilometers from Russia's eastern border.

This is its foreign minister.

The situation in Ukraine and around Ukraine is far from stable.

Vladimir Putin calls these fears alarmist, though Russia did invade Georgia in 2008.

And we know more broadly, Putin wants to test the West.
