Yesterday was a bad day for America and for Capitol Hill. We saw

violence stewards breach the Capitol and endanger the lives of Senators and

congressmen occupy their offices not within the rule of law very bad it was a stress test on the Constitution the good news is our Constitution passed the stress test.

We survived the violence.

The violent doers were taken out of Congress.

Congress resumed its debates. The attempt to undo the election failed. The

President of the United States today in a tweet on somebody else's Twitter

account because he was banned indicated that there would be a peaceful

transition. So it was a bad day for the capital, a bad day for the rule of law, but

ultimately the Constitution passed its stress test.

And so the enduring lesson of yesterday is that our Constitution can survive even violence in our capital.

On Wednesday, our Constitution was subjected to a stress test, you know what a stress test is. When you're my age, every year

or so you have to get on the treadmill and you have to push your heart to the limits and

they have to test you and see if you're okay and banks have

stress tests to make sure that their deposits are sufficiently secure.

Well yesterday our Constitution, particularly the First Amendment, had a stress test.

And although it was a terrible, terrible day, the idea that the Capitol would be breached

by violent protesters, thugs, breaking windows, endangering lives, going on to the floor

of the Senate and the House, breaking into the offices of the Speaker of the House,

four deaths resulted, was still not sure

of the circumstances under which they resulted.
