Second Samuel chapter 15 verse 4, then Absalom would say,

0:09.3

Oh, that I were judged in the land, then every man with a dispute or cause might come to me,

0:16.0

and I would give him justice. Now the context for this verse is a conspiracy from Absalom

0:24.8

to take the kingdom from King David. But the reason I want to lead us to pray according to

0:31.2

this verse in particular is because of the way God had set up the king to be the judge among his

0:41.6

people. So the people would bring disputes to the king and the king would rule justly. That's

0:48.3

why Absalom says, Oh, that I were judged in the land as king, then every man with a dispute

1:01.2

that this is Absalom wanting to overtake the king and all that was wrong about that and all

1:07.3

that was wrong, even in King David's leadership at this point, see God's design for the leader

1:15.6

among his people to be just and righteous and to rules and to rule and judge disputes and lead

1:26.0

the people with justice and righteousness. Now obviously things are different today, even among

1:34.2

God's people in the church, we are not a nation with a king in the same way that we see in the

Old Testament and we look around us in the world and we see nations led by kings or presidents or

1:48.6

dictators or prime ministers in all kinds of different ways. But one of the places my mind goes

1:54.0

when I think about God's design here in his word for his people specifically for a king, a leader

2:00.7

to carry out justice. I look around the world and we see so much injustice in leaders,

2:09.8

unrighteousness in leaders in so many different spheres, countries and nations and in other ways

2:17.4

and doesn't it make us all long for a king who is perfectly just, for a king who is perfectly

2:26.7

right. As we read through the Old Testament and we see the flaws and failures of kings,

2:32.8

ultimately these stories point us to a longing inside of us for a good, perfect, righteous
