what keeps you up at night regarding the safety of the United States of America.

Right so my oath is to protect the Constitution of Americans from all enemies both foreign and domestic.

And so both forms of terrorism are of extraordinary concern to me. We have a growing fear of domestic

violent extremism and domestic terrorism and both of those keep me up at night.

That was Attorney General Merrick Garland telling a House panel that the threat of violent

domestic terrorism now ranks right up there with foreign terror attacks as one of the issues that

keeps him up at night. It's not surprising giving the rash of domestic terror incidents from

Charleston to Pittsburgh to El Paso in recent years only to be topped off by the January 6th

assault on the US Capitol. But how far is federal law enforcement under Garland's direction prepared

to go to monitor and root out white supremacists and other violent domestic extremists?

The New York Times recently reported that federal prosecutors in Washington investigating

the January 6th insurrection devised an ambitious plan to target domestic groups suspected of being

involved, including obtaining a search warrant for Stewart Rhodes, the leader of the oath keepers.

But the FBI rejected the request, arguing it would infringe on civil liberties guidelines,

and they were backed up by senior justice department leaders. How far should the FBI go and targeting

domestic extremists? We'll talk to Mike German, a former undercover FBI agent who worked on domestic

terror cases, who is now a fellow with the Brennan Center for Justice on this episode of Skull Dugering.
