Summary

Dr. Leighton Flowers, Director of Personal Evangelism and Apologetics for Texas Baptists, interacts with an interview between John Piper (a Calvinist) and Pastor Rick Warren over their supposed soteriological differences. The topic of Total Depravity (inability) comes up and their is obvious confusion over the actual issues surrounding the controversy on this point of theology.

Being clear about your interpretation of scripture is not equal to being divisive. Clarity is needed if we are to have profitable dialogue over these issues.

Welcome back to Sotriology 101. Today we're going to listen to a conversation between Dr. John

0:06.2

Piper and Dr. Rick Warren. Rick Warren is more known for his purpose-driven life material. He's a very,

0:15.3

what some would call a seeker-sensitive type of church pastor, much different than what I think

0:20.8

a lot of people consider John

0:23.4

Piper. John Piper is much more of a theologian, whereas you'd see Rick Warren maybe as a more

0:27.7

of a practitioner. And the reason I picked out this particular interview, one is its popularity.

0:33.1

It's got thousands and thousands of views on several different websites. And another reason is that Rick

0:38.9

Warren, I think, really represents here in this conversation where I see a lot of pastors and

0:44.9

lay folks with regard to this particular conversation. And it's this kind of this feeling of,

0:51.2

you know, I want to get along with what, with you and whatever you kind of say,

0:55.9

I'm going to be pretty agreeable with what you're saying because I'm going to be conciliatory.

1:00.5

And it comes across to me that Rick Warren is not Calvinistic, but that he is trying to be as

1:08.0

conciliatory and as, as nice as possible in his conversation with

1:15.5

John here, John Piper here. And in doing so, I think he steps into blatant contradictions,

1:23.6

which we'll look at, where he pretty much just makes claims that absolutely are two blanket

1:29.5

contradictions, because in his effort to try to maintain, I think, what he typically holds

1:34.6

sociologically and what he's trying to do in being consideratory with John Piper, makes his

1:40.8

theological worldview out to be mush. And a lot of people are very critical of those of us who try to clearly delineate where

1:50.8

we stand theologically because they see that as being divisive.

1:55.5

And it's not trying to be divisive.

1:57.4

Being clear is not the same as being divisive, okay?

2:00.4

Being very particular
