Summary

Richard Edwards is a producer, mixologist, and musician who has been making music professionally for over 15 years. In this episode, Richard discusses the many projects he’s working on, including a new album and a book. Richard and Rhett talk about the challenges of being an independent artist, how the marketing and consumption of music has changed and Richard recalls his early ambition to be a director. He shares the story of the promoter in New York City who gave him the confidence to pursue his career, and why being a parent ‘resides comfortably’ next to his identity as a songwriter.   Much of Richard’s music was made under the stage name of Margot & the Nuclear So and So's, but in 2017 he released his first solo album, Lemon Cotton Candy Sunset. At the height of the pandemic, he released a new solo album, The Soft Ache and the Moon, a piano-driven collection of songs that he describes as the third in a trilogy (after 2017’s Lemon Cotton Candy Sunset and 2018’s Verdugo). His latest release, Richard Edwards Sings the Margot & Nuclear so and so’s Songbook in Quarantine (Vol 2) is available now.   Wheels Off is brought to you by Osiris Media. He does not do a lot of interviews, and he is often misunderstood as being

someone who's cranky, difficult. You know what? I say that he's misunderstood, and he is all of

1:04.6

those things, but those things don't define him or limit him. Sure, he's cranky. A lot of people are cranky. Of course he's

1:13.7

difficult. He has a strict artistic vision and he wants to see it through. But he's also really sweet

1:21.1

and kind and funny and generous. I know that's a word I use a lot. I'm very lucky when I make these wheels off podcasts that I'm able to speak with really generous people. That's the whole point. They're giving their time not just to talk about like a new record or appear on some multimillion listener platform. They're talking to me about the concept of creativity,

1:48.4

the concept of art, the ineffable beauty that is making something out of nothing.

And Richard Edwards has been doing that for years and years. He's younger

ongoing, and it's not completely fixed yet.
