mysteries in American true crime.

Beginning in 2010, police discovered the remains of 10 people on Long Island's South Shore.

Most of them young women who had been sex workers, wrapped in burlap and discarded along

a desolate stretch of highway.

The case-dominated headlines spawned a Netflix film and vexed a generation of homicide detectives, but no one was ever arrested.

Then, in July 2023, investigators charged Rex Heurman, a 59-year-old architect from Massapequa Park,

a married father of two, whose home sat directly across the bay from where the bodies were found.

To his neighbors, he was a quiet family man.

To investigators, he was one of the most twisted, suspected killers they had ever come across.

And in April 2026, exactly 1,000 days after his arrest,

Hewerman stood in a packed courtroom and did the unexpected. He pled guilty. Today, we will
