Summary

On this REWIND edition of Side Hustle Pro, I share my experience "meeting" Michelle Obama, launching the newest cohort of my Podcast Moguls training program, then get into this best of edition of Side Hustle Pro with Myleik Teele.

Myleik has revolutionized the way women address their curly hair needs. As the founder of curlBOX, an exclusive monthly subscription box full of amazing products, she has garnered partnerships with Procter & Gamble, Carol’s Daughter, Walmart, Target, SheaMoisture and more.

Before creating curlBOX, Myleik honed her talents for a decade in public relations, working with brands such as The Grammy Awards, American Idol and Nike, as well as music artists like the late Prince. Now, as the creator of the premier hair sampling box, she has developed a loyal following of savvy women. She is very much like a virtual big sister, dishing out spot\xad on entrepreneurial advice.

We all have our thing that #MyTaughtUs, but one thing I learned from her, is to intentionally put myself in the places and spaces to meet the people I want to connect with. This episode felt more like a heart to heart, an opportunity to really connect with a mentor in my head.

On Today's show, Myleik shares:

  1. What led her to be an entrepreneur
  2. The most surprising part of starting curlBOX
  3. How we as entrepreneurs can push past the need for approval
  4. Her thoughts on taking that leap even when you're not ready
  5. PLUS, get ready to hear a special listener edition of lightning round, where she answers questions from listeners in the Side Hustle Pro community

0:26.0

So since we last spoke I went to the United State of Women Conference in Los Angeles. It was really cool. I got to see Michelle

0:35.9

Obama up close and personal. It was also kind of crazy. It was super surreal being in a room with that many women, you know, of all races really all creed like it was very diverse including the planning committee.

0:50.0

It was a very inclusive day which I was very surprised and happy about and then Michelle's talk was funny because she was scheduled to speak at the end of the day.

1:01.0

So they had all these other sessions going on. They had vendors, vending

1:05.3

downstairs and yada yada. So I go to lunch with me and my best friend, Lisa, we're there

1:10.8

tending together. We go to lunch and I come back and I kind of peep what's going on like people are kind of just sitting around lurking

1:19.1

mingling around the main auditorium although there are all these other sessions going on.

1:24.4

And so I say to Lisa, I'm like, you know what?

1:27.4

I think we need to sit in this auditorium and stay here until Michelle comes. And sure you know it's around 1 o'clock at this point her

1:36.1

her talk was at 4 or you know the beginning of that session was at 4 and we go into the auditorium we find the closest seats to the front so like we're like about

1:45.6

three rows from the front and we sit down and we stayed there and sure enough there was

1:50.4

all this drama that we saw transpire. So there are people who were

1:54.4

there for the earlier sessions then they tried to go to these other sessions and

1:58.9

leave their bags or have people hold seats for them and other people who are like no no we're not doing that

2:05.1

and so people would come back and they were fighting over seats meanwhile me and

2:09.9

Lisa are just like eating popcorn like yeah yeah we on that we're not going anywhere

2:15.5

plan so luckily we you know thought to do that I mean sadly for the other

2:21.5

panelists and whatever other sessions were going on I don't know because I was only there for Michelle so sadly for them and sadly for all the people who thought they were going to show up at 330 and be early for Michelle's session because by then they were going like all the way upstairs.
