For the past 30 years, the most popular video games of all time have been what's called

0:14.5

first-person shooter games, or have had some element of first-person shooter, meaning

0:19.3

you start the game and you're in this world on the computer that you see from a first-person

0:24.4

point of view, and other people could be other friends or anybody on the network or other

0:30.0

people in the game are trying to shoot you and you're trying to shoot them. And then when

0:33.6

you shoot them, you get their money and you can buy more powers or more weapons or you can

0:37.2

find weapons. And there's an entire world, this 3D world universe that you're walking around in,

0:44.0

like kind of like Grand Theft Auto or Fortnite, you know, these very popular games. The very first one,

0:52.3

the grandfather of all these first-person shooter games is called Doom. I remember playing Doom

1:20.6

game. What do you need to do if you want to get into the gaming business or industry? If you want

1:25.6

to make a good game, he wrote a book called Doom Guy, Life in First Person, and we talk about it right

1:32.5

now. This isn't your average business podcast and he's not your average host. This is the James

1:42.9

Outers Your Show. John, I think I've been playing computer games made by you or worked on by you

1:59.4

since I was a little kid. You worked on Ultima, right? First off, I'll save you intro. You're the Doom

2:05.5

Guy. That's your book is Doom Guy. I played that nonstop in 1994 and 1990. All the incarnation, Doom

2:15.2

1, Doom 2, whatever it was out there, I played. This is probably the last hardcore computer game

2:24.0

I played. Hardcore meaning it's not like online chess or back em or anything like that. It's a

2:30.8

computer game, a role playing computer game. I never got into Fortnite and I started having kids
