Summary

The week took an unexpected turn for the legions of people enrolling at fictional Briar University to join characters from a series of books written by Elle Kennedy. Her first book, The Deal, is the basis for the eight episodes of Off Campus Season 1, and it made the best of impressions. Upon first glance, the popularity of the series could be disregarded as another romcom or Young Adult novel trope, but anyone paying attention sees past that veneer. What this series does so well, what sets it apart, is how it makes clear the profound desire for consent, respect, and trust from leading men. It also refuses to conform to the usual normalization of competition and cruelty when two people find themselves attracted to the same person. You won't find women tearing each other down or centering men over their connections, instead, they offer support and positivity to each other in every interaction. Serious issues are handled with care and consideration as characters entering adulthood navigate who they want to be in light of how they were raised or what experiences they've had. Overall, the series feels like a big hug for people raised on classic romcoms, with nods to them along the way, but with a welcome fresh take that leaves problematic storylines where they belong, buried within dusty VHS tapes of the past.

going to be like a therapy session for me because I'm going through something. I got to work

0:15.4

through it. I got to move on with my life. I'm sitting here. I can barely even see my,

0:20.4

my computer screen. Why? I'm a little bit

0:23.0

cross-eyed. Why am I cross-eyed? Because I've been holding my phone four inches in front of my face

0:27.7

watching edits of off-campus. And as everyone knows, when you love a show, fantastic, the edits are

0:35.7

going to get you. If you love a show or a movie and you don't have TikTok, I really honestly, I don't know

0:42.2

what to say to you because you're missing out on other people who also love something you

0:46.2

love, except they took a couple hours of their life and they, in their mind, made this

0:50.5

amazing tribute to it.

0:53.2

They put a great song. There's a bunch of like inside jokes and

0:57.5

things that only other people who love the same thing will get. And you get to watch these,

1:02.3

so many of them, hundred of them. And because this show is so popular, I was literally up until

1:07.1

four in the morning watching edits of off campus. I could not stop. This is partly because

1:12.5

every Friday night I do this drop on my Instagram where I like anything that has amused me

1:16.7

through the week, it made me actually laugh out loud. Like that's how high the bar is. The video has to

1:21.0

have made me laugh physically. Then I take it and I share it on my Instagram and if there's

1:25.5

like pop culture something going on, a movie, a show,

1:28.7

I put that in there too. And that's really what led to my, the demise of my Friday night. My family's out of town. I'm here and I was like, oh, I'm such a productive. No, you're not. You're just going to watch edits off campus. It just started because I was like, let me find three or four that will sum up for anybody who hasn't seen the show why it's so good i just didn't know it was

1:47.6

going to be a fire host to my face of edits. Mouthfully open, by the way. I welcomed the fire hose. There was enthusiastic consent. So this is where we're going to kick off. Here's what I'm going to do here. I'm going to talk to you about the show. Then we're going to get into like fun facts about the actors and, you know, the books because this all came from a series of rom-com books. Well, more drama rom-com. You know what I mean. Very similar. If you remember to win, I had a stint there where I read every single one of Emily Henry's books in like a week. It's like that.

Top tier, fantastic, grade A plus plus distraction for anything going on. And that also just by the way,
