its opinion pages and this week we're looking back on the year through the cartoons of our

award-winning cartoonist Peter Brooks.

So joining me is Peter Brooks and what we're going to try and do is we've got six of his best cartoons or six of some of his best cartoons from the year and we're

going to try and explain what those cartoons are and then Hugo Rifkind and

Jenny Russell II's Times columnist are going to respond to them and we're trying

and capture the essence of the year that we've just been through. So Peter you've

chosen a first cartoon on the issue that started the year with David Cameron's speech on Europe?

Yes and the cartoon itself is not one specific event although it was probably triggered

by some particular news event that takes in Europe.

But for me, it's really a backdrop to the whole year and the whole decade and the whole century seems to me and to Europe.

And it's just the idea of using a well-known image by MC Escher, which is an image of someone walking around
