I was the Guardians North of England editor then and it felt like he was acknowledging that the communities right

across my patch, places that had been labour for a hundred years or more, were not

necessarily with him for the long term. If there was one place on the electoral map that I was shocked to see Turn Blue, it was Lee, a former mining and weaving town in Greater Manchester.

To understand how it happened, I decided to spend a lot of time in Lee, talking to people who had

switched allegiances for the first time.
