China's One Child Policy. No one knows how many women had abortions as a result of the

policy, many millions.

Millions of people also underwent sterilization, not always by choice.

Some did break the law to have a second child,

though often they couldn't keep the baby.

This is the story of one particular girl, abandoned in a market and then adopted abroad.

She recently discovered what had happened to her, and she's returning to China for the first time

I'm from Michigan. I was adopted from China when I was a year old so I'm an adopted and now I'm in China.

Katie's 22 years old. She's returned to China for the first time in two decades,

and we're going with her on that journey.

I think trans racial adoption makes it super obvious that you know you're different

from like day one.

Katie was adopted from China by a white Christian couple

and now lives in the United States in Michigan.

I grew up in a place that was very white, very Caucasian. But for me, my community was so close and so tight. I saw myself as different, but I was actually really accepted. But then things started to become different when I went outside

that community and that everyone knew me and knew my story and they expected me to act certain
