Summary

Without a doubt, the music of Konami's NES catalog has a stellar reputation--if their stable of composers had only crafted the 8-bit Castlevania soundtracks, they'd still go down in history as some of the greatest video game maestros of all time. But did you know Konami applied the same amount of musical genius to all of their 8-bit games, regardless of their disposability? On this week's Retronauts Micro, take a listen some some of Konami's 8-bit tunes you might have overlooked--unless you're a roller derby enthusiast, I guess. Hello there friends, well-wishers and even possible enemies!

0:25.7

This is your friend Bob Mackie with another episode of Retrinauts Micro.

And in case you don't know what this is, Retrinauts, well we are a class gaming podcast,

0:33.4

and these micro episodes are shorter episodes that are either me or Jeremy alone,

0:38.3

talking about a subject that probably won't, you know, support a 90 minute episode.

0:42.9

As much as you would want it to, we're only human people, there's only so much we can do.

0:46.8

So here we have another Konami-focused episode, and before you think that Jeremy and I are colluding

0:51.4

to just cram Konami content on your throat, I decided to make this episode months ago,

0:56.2

so I think this is all just a big coincidence, but it is kind of centered around the fact that,

1:00.6

like I said a few episodes ago, Konami is not focusing on console games anymore.

1:05.0

I'm guessing the Phantom Pain will probably be their last big console game before they move

1:09.0

primarily to the mobile space where there's nothing but money, rivers of milk and honey,

1:14.1

and apps all around.

1:15.7

And if you listen to Jeremy's last micro episode, and I really recommend you do,

1:19.8

he did that entire episode about the Ultra Label, which was a

1:23.0

Sly way for Konami to publish extra games on the NES, because Nintendo had a strict rule.

1:29.0

Five games per year, we don't want to flood the market, we don't want the console market to crash

1:32.8

again, so Konami developed the Ultra Label as a way to release lesser titles, although these

1:38.2

lesser titles include things like Metal Gear, which eventually became a pretty big damn deal.
