Hello everybody. Welcome to another episode of RetroNots. I'm your host for this one Bob Mackie. And today we're presenting something we've never done before. And that is a full length commentary about that famous movie from the summer of 1993 about a magical world where dinosaurs come to life. And of course that movie is a great way to live.

1:04.4

And of course that movie Super Mario Bros. Live Action movie. Sorry if that intro was misleading. That's what we're doing today on this podcast before I go on who is here with me today. Sometimes as always. Hey, it's Henry Gilbert and I'm ready to be de-evolved by this movie. That's right. So for my episodes of RetroNots for April, I'm dubbing the month of April. Marprolo, which I could have done this last month and called it Marchio. I could have done it next month and call it May Rio. Yeah.

1:31.4

And said I decided to go for the superior term, Marprolo, which means this week you're going to be getting a commentary for the movie and in a few weeks ago, an actual episode about the movie with the experts on the topic. So I'm themeing all of my episodes about for this month on this movie because I have gone slightly insane.

1:50.4

And you know what this movie it deserves to podcast because it's a complete mess and we're going to have a lot of fun talking about it. So yeah, this is going to be a fun informational commentary. It's not going to be like a riff track style thing we've written jokes.

2:02.4

I have some jokes in mind for some parts of this movie. I got some gab there. Yes. And after we do this in trouble, let you know how to sync up and then you can watch through it. Watch it through with us. But yeah, before I begin Henry, what is your relationship with this movie? Well, yeah, listeners may know that I am a big time Mario fan. It has been.

2:23.4

It's what brought me to video gaming as a I guess I would four or five when I first saw the super Mario brothers playing on a friend's TV. And so when I was 11 in this movie was coming out or almost 11.

2:37.4

I had been waiting for my whole life like I was not just a consumer of the video games, but also the cartoon, the cereal every toy like I was wearing Mario T shirt. So as my brother, we loved love the Mario games. But we didn't see this the week it came out. We actually did see it after another much, much, much better movie about dinosaurs.

3:02.4

And so when we saw this at the dollar theater, like this was like a month later, it's so it's in it's a dirty theater. It's only us in the theater, probably not the best way to see a movie anyway.

3:15.4

And I remember being one of the first movies was like, wait, I don't like this. I should like this. And I don't. I feel bad. And just trying to understand those feelings for the like the rest of my life.

3:29.4

It's a rough feeling the first time you don't like media as a kid like no, all TV shows are good, right? All movies are good. I'm getting to watch a movie about a thing I like. Why don't I feel happy? You know, we you have to interrogate those feelings often in your life.

3:43.4

Well, for me, I'll go into more detail on the next podcast we do about this. But yes, like you Henry, big Mario fan almost from birth, when I played Mario Brothers for the first time, super Mario brothers, I thought, okay, screw all toys. My life is now video games. I'm devoting my life to video games. And I still kind of have. But yeah, I was in theaters to when the Mario Mania Nintendo Power Guide came out in 1991.

4:06.4

It had like a two page thing about this movie like two years before it came out saying we're making a Mario Brothers movie. And you know, it's going to be about all these things. It's going to be live action. And that got me excited. And I was in theaters, but not first run theaters for this movie because I don't think it was in first run theaters for a while.

4:22.4

It was a friends birthday in July of 93. The choice was up to us. We could either see hot shots part D or super Mario Brothers. I loved hot shots. I knew the sequel would be funny, but I thought obligated to see super Mario Brothers. And I saw it. And I was in theaters. And I was like, everything is wrong. And I don't like this.

4:45.4

And I don't think we even talked about the movie after we saw it in that July day in 1993.

4:52.4

You know what? If your paths would have changed there, I think it would have been an uncomfortable night for your mom,

4:59.2

shaperoting all the kids to explain the lengthy sex jokes in hot shots part two.

5:04.4

Yes, yes, later when my parents rented it for the long, like I think top gun sex scene parody.

5:11.4

Yeah, with like diving board and making bacon and eggs on her stomach instead of melting the ice, I was like, I think I'm gonna go upstairs and get a coke.
