0:23.1	0.5.com. So let's jump straight in. Retinopathy of prematurity is a condition affecting
0:31.2	preterm and low birth weight neonates. It mainly affects infants born before 32 weeks gestation.
0:41.5	Abnormal blood vessel development in the retina can lead to scarring, retinal detachment,
0:49.0	and blindness. Early detection and treatment can prevent vision loss.
0:56.0	Let's talk about the pathophysiology.
0:59.7	Retinal blood vessel development starts at around 16 weeks gestation
1:04.4	and is complete by 37 to 40 weeks.
1:09.6	The blood vessels grow from the middle of the retina to the outer area.
1:16.7	This vessel formation is stimulated by hypoxia, which is normal in the retina during pregnancy.
1:25.8	Vascular endothelial growth factor, or VEGF, promotes the development of new vessels.
1:34.4	Veg F and blood vessel development are suppressed when the retina is exposed to higher oxygen
1:41.2	concentrations in a preterm baby,
1:48.4	particularly with supplementary oxygen during medical care.
1:53.5	When the hypoxic environment reoccurs,
1:57.1	the retina responds with overproduction of VEGF,
1:59.7	new abnormal vessel development,
2:05.5	which is called neovascularization, and scar tissue formation.
2:13.0	The abnormal blood vessels may regress and leave the retina without a blood supply.
2:17.3	The scar tissue may cause retinal detachment.
