Here's a controversial opinion. I have hot takes. I really share them. Today I'm going to.

Meetings. Are you ready for this? Meetings are great.

Now I know what you're thinking. Meetings are awful. And I've been in some awful meetings,

so I hear you. I know where you're coming from. If you go to Twitter where I spend some time

each day, and check out the hashtag meetings suck, I can tell you right now you will find a lot

of information about bad meetings. People's very serious thoughts, people's very serious,

and sometimes scandalous memes about terrible, awful, regrettably dismal meetings.

And all of that's true. But if we didn't have meetings, we wouldn't have the U.S. Constitution.

We wouldn't have the King James Bible. We never would have got Neil Armstrong to the moon

without some meetings. So all I'm saying is let's give meetings a chance.

So if history tells us that meetings can be good, and certainly go back in your own history,

you've had some meetings that were great. You've had some meetings that were helpful.

You may not be able to access that memory all that easily when you're sitting through another

dismal head banger. But if you're not in that meeting, and if you think objectively, you can

recall times when a meeting was super helpful and really helped move a project forward.

But it's not true all the time, is it? One of the problems is that we default to meetings when

we shouldn't. And so we end up with calendars of time confetti, days, hours, chopped to pieces,

with meetings here, meetings there, interspersed between little bits of time to actually get work done.

But part of our problem is we forget that meetings are work. And when we forget that meetings are

work, we're not as intentional as we should be about planning them. You'll plan your tasks,

you'll plan your time, but most of us never bother planning our meetings. And that's what we're
