Good evening. Once again, I'm Stephanie Rule, and it is day 164 of the second Trump administration. And what a day it is. We are following breaking news from Capitol Hill. And after hours and hours of stalling House Republicans finally tried to press forward with their budget bill,

0:23.5

and now they are stalling again. Republican leaders spent the entire day trying to whip up

0:28.5

enough support to pass Donald Trump's mega bill that includes tax breaks, billions for immigrant

0:34.2

enforcement, and Medicaid cuts. They started a key procedural vote 90 minutes

0:39.2

ago, but they are holding the vote open because they do not have the votes to actually pass it.

Speaker Mike Johnson was hoping to get the bill passed today and send it to Trump's office.

Let's bring in Melanie Zanona, NBC Capitol Hill correspondent. Melanie, you have been down there around the

0:55.8

clock a long, long day. Where do things stand right now? Yeah, well, we're in the middle of a pretty

1:01.0

high-stakes stare-down between Speaker Mike Johnson and some of these key Republican holdouts.

1:06.3

As you mentioned, they had to delay this other vote for hours today because they did not have

1:11.4

the votes to move on. So they've been working behind the scenes, trying to twist arms.

Trump was meeting with a number of different Republicans at the White House. Speaker

Mike Johnson and some Trump administration officials were having meetings up here on Capitol

1:23.3

Hill as well. But it still looked like a few hours ago that they were shy of the necessary

1:28.8

votes. But Speaker Mike Johnson made a key decision here, and he is betting that if he put

1:33.5

that vote on the floor, that ultimately he could get enough members to vote to yes. But at this

1:38.9

point, they don't have the votes yet. This vote has now been held open for over an hour. There

1:42.6

are at least four Republicans who voted no, and there are several others who still have not voted yet. And so they're trying to whip these members in real time. We've seen Johnson and the leadership working these members on the phone. Johnson himself was seen rushing off the floor at one point on the telephone. One of those members, though, as you know, Brian Fitzpatrick, he immediately

2:02.1

raced off the floor and is nowhere to be found. Other members, Republicans, were scrambling to try to find him, presumably to try to whip him and flip him, and they can't find him. And they've been trying to reach him by phone and text. So clearly he does not want to be flipped. But just to give you a sense of the scene right now is

2:18.2

they are scrambling to try to get the votes to try to get this bill over the finish line. Now,

2:23.1

I'm saying all of this to point out that yes, well, it's difficult right now and they are

2:28.3

working aggressively to try to get this vote. The feeling among leadership is that maybe it doesn't
