During the 1970s, relations between the Soviet Union and The United States were quickly deteriorating. Both the CIA and KGB were engaged in a fierce intelligence arms race. While the U.S. felt confident in its technological superiority, reports began to come in that perhaps the Soviets were developing intelligence-gathering methods based around more paranormal techniques. The CIA immediately took the initiative to try and assess the operational value of different types of psychic abilities. Acquiring government funding for almost a decade the CIA laid the groundwork for similar projects to be developed by the U.S. Army and Airforce. The project culminated in a United States Airman seemingly able to locate a downed Russian spy plane that crashed into the thick jungles of the Central African Republic. Satellite imaging had failed to locate the aircraft but the young volunteer, reportedly, was able to provide sets of coordinates that led a recovery team directly to the crash site.
