| 0:00.0 | Before we go, and we want to take a moment to remember author, sports writer, and a frequent |
| 0:06.1 | guest on our program, John Feinstein, who died just today. John wrote about basketball, football, |
| 0:12.5 | golf, and other sports, much of the time as a columnist for The Washington Post. He also wrote |
| 0:17.8 | more than 40 books, including A Good Walk Spoiled, a Civil War, Novels for Young |
| 0:23.2 | Readers, and his breakthrough in 1986, a season on the brink that chronicled a tough season |
| 0:28.9 | for the Indiana Hoosiers and their explosive coach Bobby Knight. John was incisive. He was funny, |
| 0:35.4 | and he could be biting, too, whether he was criticizing the NCAA |
| 0:39.3 | or the NFL, as he did in his 2021 conversation with Judy Woodruff about his book, |
| 0:45.3 | Raise a Fist, Take a Knee. Race plays a role in our entire society, as we see all the time nowadays, |
| 0:52.3 | but very much in sports. It's not hard if you're a |
| 0:56.8 | player to get a chance to play because playing is a meritocracy. But getting a job as a head |
| 1:03.3 | coach in the NFL, getting a job as a head coach in college football or basketball, |
| 1:07.7 | general manager's jobs, CEO jobs, those are much harder. |
| 1:11.4 | And there are numbers that back up those facts. |
| 1:14.2 | In fact, the last 20 NFL jobs that have opened, 75% of the players are black, two black coaches |
| 1:21.1 | have been hired. |
| 1:22.2 | And believe me, when I tell you, there are plenty of qualified candidates for these jobs, |
| 1:26.6 | and they're not getting them. |
| 1:27.9 | Our friend John Feinstein was 69 years old and he will be missed. |
