Summary

The Mississippi State family suffered a terrible loss over the weekend when former coach and player D.J. Looney died of a heart attack following a workout on the campus of Louisiana-Lafayette.


Today, I share some insight into the person D.J. was as well as his love for Mississippi State.

I am your good friend and host Steve Robertson here on the Monday edition of the yard.

I had considered doing the yard tomorrow because that was a travel day for me getting back from Arkansas.

Went to see my first grandchild.

I told you guys that we had some things going on.

And she's doing well and had her first pediatrician appointment today.

And we're very happy to have a healthy, healthy new member to our family.

But it was a difficult weekend in other respects.

And, you know, I know that DJ, Looney, my friend, would not want anything to do with him to overshadow the joy.

But I tell you, it's been a tremendous loss.

And I want to talk a little bit about DJ before we get into a few other things. A lot to talk about. I mean, I'm going to take my time today and we'll, you know, we'll talk about a lot of things that have gone on here in the last few days related to Mississippi State Athletics. But I was on Ben Love Show at Lafayette, Louisiana earlier today, kind of sharing my room and, you know, my memories of DJ. and one of the things that it kind of sharing my room and you know my memories of DJ and one of the

things that it kind of makes me laugh when I think about DJ and we've laughed about this many

times over the years in the lot that the last time they allowed those uh football combines to be

attended by college football coaches was DJ Looney's junior year of high school, you know, out of Oak Mountain

High School there in Birmingham. And so I knew about DJ Looney. I knew state was recruiting him.

We had not offered yet. And so go to the Scout Combine. It actually happened to be the same day

that Chris Ralph was there. Matter of fact, Chris Ralph was the quarterback of the day, the best quarterback that day. And little did we know that he and

DJ would end up being friends and teammates. But DJ, I told him, I said, listen, aren't you

DJ learning? And he goes, yeah, to introduce myself. And I was like, hey, you're a little bit taller than people told me you were and he goes how tall did they tell you i wasn't it they told me you're about six foot and so he had a few he had a few colorful words to say and he goes no man i'm six two and i don't know to this day that he was six two or not because back in those days he wore his hair a little higher you know it's like he was trying to it's like he knew he was going to be measured the combine

so he wanted to grow it grow a little bit of a some growth on top and um and so that's what he did

but on that day you know a friendship was born and uh you know you know for that class DJ was

one of my best sources because he took ownership of that class.
