Summary

We could not be more psyched to be joined this week by New York Times bestselling author, podcast legend and Vanessa's "Ibiza" co-star, Phoebe Robinson! On this incredible episode we talk about how the three of us all grew up in the same suburbs of Ohio and our favorite hang-outs, reminisce about our favorite shops to hit at the local mall and talk about how our teenage fashion choices were informed by our developing sense of identity. We also dig deep into the history of Sketchers shoes and the controversy surrounding their "Shape-Ups" shoes that almost led to the company's downfall. Finally, we play a powerful game of LEGIT MOAN OR UNNECESSARY GROAN where we celebrate the legacy of local newscaster Ramona Robinson, debate if aesthetics are more important than doctors when it comes to hospitals and explore if the world is truly made up of—as one disgruntled Plain Dealer reader puts it—"crooks and liars." In a universe of unlimited podcasts, this is a conversation that cuts through all of the fluff and proves why Phoebe is a truly podcasting legend as well as a very cool friend.

Hi, I'm Vanessa Bayer, and this is my brother Jonah.

We're two siblings who love to talk about our childhood and nostalgia and how it shaped us into the people we are today.

Who are pretty excited to talk about Sol in Ohio, if I do say so myself.

Welcome to How Did We Get Weird. So Vanessa, today, you know, we have a guest who grew up in the same area as us, and we're really excited to introduce her.

0:34.6

But we wanted to talk a little bit about that area for people.

0:37.3

We have a lot of listeners of the podcast who are from that area, but a lot of listeners who

0:40.2

aren't. So we're talking about the suburb next to our Solon, Ohio. I had a lot of hangouts in Solon

growing up. I'm wondering what your memories of Solon are. And our dad had his business there, of course.

0:49.4

Right, right, right, right, right. I remember going to our dad's business there. I remember Miles Market is like a favorite memory of mine because it's kind of like a fancy sort of outdoor seeming grocery store that always had stuff that our parents would say was really expensive, but it was before I understood how money worked exactly.

1:11.1

Sure. And the Solon movie theater. I think that was really expensive, but it was before I understood how money worked exactly. Sure.

1:11.6

And the Solon movie theater. I think that was really the biggest thing that I remember is going

1:17.4

to the Solon movie. Yeah, the Sol and movie theater and it had the food court next door.

1:20.8

And then it had cappuccino. Right. Is that what it was called? I don't know. I wasn't

1:25.0

into coffee till, you know, much later. I wasn't really...

1:27.6

Until we went to Lilith Fair together. Yeah, yeah, that was the big moment for me.

1:31.0

What are some of your favorite stolen memories? Well, obviously, I used to hang out a lot at

1:34.7

the Dunkin' Donuts in the parking lot there. I've talked about that a lot, me and my friend,

1:39.2

Brian, a bunch of people, we would hang out there every weekend. I worked at a record store there. It seemed like a little bit, it was right when I was in college. You could take home anything from the store you wanted if you wrote it down on a piece of paper, which seems like not the best system. And then later found out that both of my managers got fired because they were taking stuff into the garbage cans and then stealing it after work. Got it. But it was a fun job.

2:01.5

And what else?

2:02.1

Bob Evans, of course, getting some biscuits there.

2:05.2

There was a precursor to Whole Foods, I believe, called Wild Oats.

2:08.9

Yes, yes.
