This week we are thrilled to sit down with Wolfgang Van Halen, who you probably know from playing bass in a little band called Van Halen as well as fronting his own band, Mammoth WVH. We discuss what it was like growing up with Eddie Van Halen as your father (and why he didn't want Wolfgang skateboarding), formative musical experiences and weigh the odds of a Jonah Bayer signature guitar. We also get into Wolfgang's other obsession: Video games. We discuss the way Nintendo 64 paved the way for this hobby, the difference between Mario/Wario and the glory days of Guitar Hero and Rock Band. We also get into how Wolfgang's mom Valerie Bertinelli helped support his gaming habit (and how he tries to scare her with games today), why being an adult means you can basically do whatever you want and Vanessa wonders why her dentist felt the need to clean the stains on the back of her teeth? We also play a round of YESTOLGIA OR NOSTALGIA where we discuss the reboot of the video game "Crazy Taxi," the dramatic update of "Bewitched" and the return of Wendy's Crispy Panko Fish Sandwich. Wolfgang also lets us in on the secret reason why his dad always ordered the Filet-O-Fish when stopping for fast food. Be sure to check out Mammoth EVH's latest album "Mammoth II" and catch them on tour right now! If you're interested in learning more about the SA-126 guitar, check that out HERE!

0:41.0 | Yeah, when I was 13, I got a guitar. It was a cork guitar. And it was white with Van Halen-esque kind of stripes painted on it. I think someone did in, like, lipstick or something. It was very, very kind of crude, but I thought it was like the coolest guitar. |
0:56.8 | And I took lessons at the place in Cleveland. |
0:59.3 | It was a music store, but then the lessons were in the basement. |
1:01.9 | And I took lessons from this guy, Andy, who chain smoked the whole time. |
1:05.6 | And it was like an unfinished basement. |
1:08.2 | And he would just play like Metallica Search and Destroy and show me how to play it. |
1:11.9 | And I remember at one point, I think mom heard there was some like kind of sketchy stuff happening at the store. |
1:18.6 | Like I got a guitar from them and I think it might have been stolen. I was like, they were like, |
1:23.6 | they were like, what color do you want? I was like this. And they're like, oh, we can't get that, but how's this one? We have this one right now. |
1:30.1 | So I got my first Les Paul studio there. |
1:32.4 | But yeah, eventually I switched to this place Academy Music. |
1:34.9 | I started with this guy, Dave Baker, who was great. |
1:36.4 | But I remember mom being like, you can't keep going to this place as like a 14-year-old kid. |
1:40.9 | It's not. Because it was maybe a front for drugs or something. Yeah, there was, yeah, I think there was some weird stuff going on there. |
1:47.2 | I think mom's instincts were good. |
1:48.3 | I was, I was mad, though. |
