Summary

Tell all your friends that this week on the podcast we are joined by Taking Back Sunday vocalist Adam Lazzara! You may know him as the charismatic frontman for an incredibly influential band but Vanessa is far more interested in learning about how he worked in a deli and his go-to sandwich order. We also explore the tropical connotations of Thousand Island salad dressing, Taking Back Sunday's recent experience placing a backyard show and Jonah puts on his musical journalist hat to discuss the phenomenon of "emo nostalgia." But that's not all. We also dig deep into the history of miniature golf, our favorite putt-putt memories from childhood and explore the recent craze of "eat-ertainment." We wrap up the fun with a round of CHANGE DOT DORK where we debate the merits of flatter nachos, cool cat emojis and updates to the Cap'n Crunch cereal box. Make (damn) sure to pick up Taking Back Sunday's latest album 152 when it comes out on October 27th!

Hi, I'm Vanessa Bayer and this is my brother Jonah.

0:05.9

We're two siblings who love to talk about our childhood and nostalgia and how it shaped us into the people we are today.

0:10.9

Who hope you'll tell all your friends about this podcast.

0:14.2

Welcome to How Did We Get Weird. I had a little bit of a different adjective.

0:32.0

Vanessa, you probably didn't get that reference, but I think a lot of our listeners

0:35.1

will.

0:35.5

Yeah, but maybe I should tell our listeners what I had in there. What did you have in there? What did you have? Who loved the weekend,

0:40.9

including Sundays. That's good, too. Okay, thank you. It's good too. It's good too.

0:46.4

Well, just to get started, I wanted to say, Jonah, really missed you. I got to finally meet our long lostlost cousin, former host of Headbanger's Ball, Ricky Rackman.

0:59.2

And he was doing a one-man show. He was touring with it. And his last date was in L.A.

1:05.4

And I went with my friend Rachel. We really had a blast. And we really, I think you would have absolutely loved the show so much.

1:12.7

And that was the thing that was like so sad was that you weren't there because obviously you don't

1:16.7

live in L.A. and it would have been hard for you to make it. But the thing that I also would think

1:22.2

you would have really appreciated is I kept trying to figure out who in the audience, because it was in L.A., and that's where

1:27.6

Ricky had his famous club, the Cat House and everything. I was trying to figure out who in the

1:31.8

audience was like someone that you would know from a band or something. The guy sitting next to us

1:37.6

who actually offered us fries that he wasn't going to eat, and we ate them, which is probably

1:42.7

a cool thing to do. But he pointed out to

1:46.3

us, Gilby Clark from Guns and Roses. Guns and Roses, yeah. So he was in the audience. And then

1:52.5

Ricky kept talking to different people in the audience that he knew from opening the cat house and

1:56.7

stuff. But he had so many crazy stories. Axel Rose at one point asked him if he could have this

2:02.1

guy open for his show or work at his club, and it was like this little skinny guy, and he
