Summary

In this week's impersonation-heavy ep, the Bayers are thrilled to welcome their friend, the hilarious Jay Pharoah!! Jay and Vanessa reminisce about SNL impressions they did based on their childhoods and some celebrity impressions they did later on (speaking of- who does a better Denzel Washington- you'll have to listen to find out!) The Bayers and Jay also talk about a fave show from growing up, Nickelodeon's "Doug" and Jay and Vanessa are so proud to learn what their tv son is up to today: winning a Daytime Emmy! ("tv son" is kind of nuanced in this instance but again, ya gotta listen to find out how!) Plus, in an exciting game of "Legit Moan or Unnecessary Groan" they all debate new moves being made by The History Channel, how transparent restaurant commercials need to be, and whether texting your parents is a sufficient way to communicate. You're gonna love this ep so much you'll be saying "Alright, Okay!" for the rest of the week (AGAIN, this might not make sense now, but that's why you have to listen!"

Hi, I'm Vanessa Bayer and this is my brother Jonah.

0:06.0

We're two siblings who love to talk about our childhood and nostalgia and how it shaped us into the people we are today.

0:11.0

Who are pretty good at impressions, if I do say so myself.

0:14.0

Welcome to How Did We Get Weird. So, Jonah, I was thinking our incredible guest today, he's also a very good friend.

0:34.3

He's very good at impressions.

0:36.9

We all know that. And when I was on S&L with him,

0:40.4

he used to do an impression of one of his childhood principles. And it got me thinking about,

0:46.3

Jonah, did you know that I used to do a character on S&L based on one of my educators?

0:52.1

Vaguely, but I don't know the full story, so you should definitely tell it.

0:55.7

Okay, so I used to do this character that I called Mrs. Meadows, and she was based on my seventh

1:01.6

grade English teacher, Mrs. Wagner. And she was a poetry teacher in the S&L sketch. And we did it a few

1:07.9

times, like my first few seasons, but again, she's an English teacher.

1:11.8

The reason I found her to be so funny, which I think this is like a really recurring thing with a

1:16.1

lot of teachers, she tried to show us like how cool she was and how relatable. And the main way

1:22.4

she did it was in English class, we all had to write like our own autobiographies about our lives.

1:28.5

And she kind of tried to entice us by being like, you can write about boys.

1:33.5

You can write about your first kiss.

1:35.5

Like she tried to like impress us and make us be like, wait a second.

1:39.4

This is our English teacher and she's letting us write about our first kiss.

1:42.9

This rocks.

1:45.3

Like I think that's kind of like what she was like going for there. And so then obviously the character evolved and I

1:50.9

had her go like, and okay. But that's kind of how she did it. It was like my vocal version of her
