Summary

We can remediate this soil the easy way or the hard way. Let’s do it the easy way! We learn how to remediate our soils and the 3 ways that you can actually become contaminated by heavy metals. Connect With Anna Paltseva: Dr. Anna Paltseva, Endowed Assistant Professor, is an international urban soil scientist at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette (ULL), School of Geosciences. Her expertise is in urban soil contamination and remediation of urban gardens. She helps people to determine soil heavy metals, their potential impact on human health, and to find the best ways to improve soil quality in urban gardens. In 2021 she established the Delta Urban Soils Laboratory at ULL to provide soil testing services and informal education to communities, small production farmers, and gardeners in Louisiana and beyond. Let's just say that you do a soil test, and you figure out that you have some heavy

metals, or as we've recently learned toxic elements in your soil at a high enough concentration

0:22.3

that it really warrants you trying to fix it instead of maybe giving up on that area.

Well, we have Dr. Anna Ponceva back on the show, and I think this is probably the episode

0:33.3

and that everyone wants to know, how do I remediate or fix soil that has these heavy metals

0:40.4

or these toxic elements, and out of curiosity, just if we zoom up to maybe the industrial

0:45.4

of the urban construction level, I'm assuming that sometimes this will happen in a construction

project, and they'll have to remediate that soil somehow.

0:53.1

How do they do it in large scale?

0:54.9

See then we get to the smaller backyard gardener.

0:57.7

Yeah.

In a nutshell, there are Exito and Insito remediation mechanisms, and Exito are very expensive.

When they have to do it outside somewhere, they take this soil, it's like a construction

side that you describe, or maybe it's an old factory, or maybe it's a brown field,

1:17.9

they have to excavate the soil and bring it to facility and go through different treatments.

1:23.8

There are multiple ways how it can be done, the soil washing, they may go on to different

temperature regimes.

1:29.3

It depends what kind of contamination it is, of course, they may go to some sterilization.

1:35.4

There are so many varieties of choices these days, but it's super expensive, and that's

1:41.7

why scientists came up with ideas how to change soil property and heavy metal contamination

1:48.2

to make it less harmful to humans through Insito application of soil amendments.

1:56.4

So technically, we don't have to go and take this, excavate the soil and bring it somewhere
