Where did you get the idea for this in the first place?

Well, obviously as a national news reporter, we cover a lot of mass shootings.

So unfortunately that was my entryway into this story.

We started looking at the gun that a lot of mass shooters were using,

and then I started covering the gun industry,

and that became my full-time beat.

And as we looked into the origins of the AR-15,

we were just fascinated, surprised, and awed by the story, and we knew we had to write a book about it.
