On September 6, 1967 in Auburn, Alabama, Juanita Sinclair was sitting in her living room,

sewing when, just before midnight, an intruder broke open the door leading right into the den, carrying a shotgun.

Firing off a round that struck Juanita, a widow, in the arm, the assailant then flew down the stairs into the lower level of the home, where her eldest daughter, 20-year-old Kathy, having heard a noise, was hiding in the closet.

She then escaped through a nearby window before the gunman could see her.

The men then fired off a shot into a life-sized doll that was sitting on the bed,

retraced his steps to the intermediate level of the home,

and continued to the upper level.

That's when Juanita seized the opportunity to escape out the open door,

and up with Kathy in the driveway,

and together the two women ran towards a neighbor's home about 500 feet away

to call the police.
