Some of the most disturbing acts of terror are committed in the name of religion.

It's hard to understand how brutality can be inspired by beliefs people hold sacred,

and it can be easy to blame religion itself.

For instance, when ISIS, the so-called Islamic State, began beheading captives,

it sparked a renewed and kind of nasty debate over the nature of Islam.

One of the most widely discussed exchanges was this one between Sam Harris, Ben Affleck, and Bill Maher.

I'm not denying that certain people are bigoted against Muslims as people, and that's a problem.

Big of you.

But why are you so hostile about this?

It's gross.

It's racist.

It's not, but it's so not.

It's like saying those statements shifty Jew.

You're not listening to what we are saying.

You guys are saying, if you want to be liberals, believe in liberal principles, like freedom of speech.
