Summary

Spencer Bland joins me to discuss his journey through various Christian denominations as a southern-based comedian who now takes a more open-ended approach to spirituality. We explore how he uses his religious background as source material for his comedy, including a hilarious story about a demon named Kyle, while maintaining a thoughtful and nuanced perspective that honors personal experience rather than broad critique. Our discussion brings up the parallels between comedy and therapy as tools for processing religious experiences and how humor can help acknowledge both the absurdity and significance of our past.  Spencer's Instagram | @spencerspicy Highlights 08:57 The Role of Humor in Religion 17:49 The Intersection of Comedy and Religion 31:02 From Pastor to Comedian 54:54 Healing from Religious Trauma 01:10:07 Reflections on Mission Trips and Cultural Christianity ___________________________________________ Follow Dan on IG: www.instagram.com/dancoke/ Or Twitter: twitter.com/DanKoch Faith deconstruction resources: www.soyouredeconstructing.com/ Edited by Josh Gilbert (joshgilbertmedia.com -- he is accepting more work!) Welcome back, everybody, to you have permission, the show that aims to take both Christianity

0:08.0

and the modern world of science and culture very seriously. My name's Dan Koch. I'm a licensed

0:13.6

therapist and liberal Christian. And they say that the easiest way to make God laugh is to make a plan,

0:20.6

well, I have a plan for

0:21.7

today's episode and episodes like this, and that is to talk all things, religion, and spirituality

0:27.2

with comedians, in part because my favorite comedy ends up dealing with pretty much the

0:33.2

deepest human questions and realities. There are Spencer Bland, you are today's comic on the other

0:39.9

line. Do you agree that comedy gets at that deep stuff? I do, man. Yeah, I wholeheartedly agree.

0:46.8

I mean, a lot of my comedy is just telling stories from me growing up. Much to some audiences

0:51.5

chagrin, I am a long-winded comedian, and I just tell stories about

0:55.9

the absolutely insane experiences I had. And I've probably tried every single denomination of church

1:03.1

and even some that would not even be considered church. So yeah, there's just stories from that.

1:08.4

I have to tailor those jokes, depending on the audience. I'm a comedian. I wouldn't

1:12.7

say the Deep South, but I'm a comedian in the South. So, you know, you kind of read the room when you get out there. I used to have a way, it's funny that you said laugh with God because I used to, you know, I have a section just that's all, all about my religious upbringing. And I used to have a part of that where I would literally, as a joke, I would kind of like lean into the

1:29.3

mic and be like, are you guys ready to laugh at God?

1:32.2

And that would make people so uncomfortable. I bet. I bet. I actually stopped doing it for that

1:40.2

very reason. Because I definitely don't, you know, religion can be a very polarizing thing and I don't want to,

1:45.8

I try to, I, and I'll even say this in the middle of my set sometimes, I try very much to

1:50.0

say that like, these are about my experiences.

1:52.6

Yeah.

1:53.0

I'm not trying to talk in generalities about Christianity or Christians in general.

1:57.4

I make jokes about everything.
