Summary

Most weeks now I get an email from someone who's sure they've believed a lie their whole life — that the faith holding their family, their friendships, their sense of self together is collapsing, and they don't know who they are without it. I've been that person more than once. So in this essay I want to say the thing I wish someone had said to me: what's dying might not be your faith. It might just be your idea of what your faith was. Drawing on Whitehead's four stages of religion — ritual, emotion, belief, rationalization — I make the case that belief-centered Christianity is a late, late development, maybe 200 years old in its current intensity, not 2,000. For most of human history religion was bodies moving together, food shared, the dead remembered. The relationship was never in the certainty. It was always in the meal. 1:00.2	I'll paraphrase it to protect the person who sent it, but I'm not changing the temperature.
1:05.7	I think I believed a lie my whole life, they wrote. Evangelical Christianity has been the center of who I am,
1:12.9	my family, my friendships, my sense of vocation, how I parent the way I read every part of my own
1:19.2	life. And now I have so many questions about its agenda, its history, this intellectual credibility
1:26.5	that I don't know how to keep believing it.
1:29.5	I don't know who I am without this faith. I also don't know how to keep holding it.
1:35.0	I'm terrified. These emails come most weeks now. The names change. The denominations change.
1:42.1	The specific doctrine that first broke the changes. Sometimes
1:46.2	it's hell or six-day creation. Sometimes it's what the pastor said about queer people. Sometimes
1:51.6	it's the slow recognition that the Bible they were told was a single seamless garment,
1:57.4	has more authors and more arguments stitched into it than were they were ever
2:02.4	really permitted to see sometimes it isn't a doctrine that broke first at all sometimes it's an
