Senators are inching closer to a deal for an economic relief plan despite some recent setbacks.

Twice in just 24 hours Democrats in the Senate rejected the Republicans proposed

plan but the Hill reports they were working together to make some changes late

last night and another vote could come as soon as today. The latest version of

the Senate stimulus package has a

1.8 trillion dollar price tag. It would set aside 350 billion dollars to

help small businesses and 250 billion for direct cash payments to Americans.

There would also be large spending increases for hospitals and health care providers,

but Democrats have been concerned about the $500 billion set aside for corporations.

They want to limit stock buybacks, CEO bonus pay, and layoffs,

adding in more oversight.

Republicans insist the money would be handled appropriately

and accuse the Democrats of delaying the bill's passage during a national emergency.

But again, lawmakers are still working on this, and as of midnight Monday, they now seem to at least be closer to a compromise.
