No doubt you already understand a fair bit about the clutch in your motorcycle.

It's your connection between the engine and the transmission.

Clutch in, the bike doesn't go, clutch out, the bike goes, but there's times when a clutch doesn't really act like a clutch, at least not in the way it has traditionally.

If you follow new motorcycles, for instance, you've likely heard about the new generation Africa Twin.

It seems to be getting all kinds of great publicity since its

launch in 2016. The Africa Twin is a great bike in many ways, but one distinguishing

difference from all its competitors is the availability of DCT, that's a dual clutch system, which operates basically like an automatic transmission, except it's not.

So coming up, we're going to demystify the DCT. We're going to talk

about what it is, how it works, and why even an expert rider cannot outshift this

new transmission.

But for those of you who don't have an Africa Twin,

have no interest in buying one, will never go and buy one.

There is a type of auto clutch that you can probably get for your model of bike.

It's not an automatic transmission, but it is an auto clutch.

So you get some of the benefits that you're going to hear us talk about with the DCT system,

with the Honda in your own bike and one of the big makers of these clutches is

reckless. We've got somebody from the recluse factory who's going to help us understand what exactly

that clutch is and how it works.

Now both of these systems will allow you to forget about the clutch in the traditional sense

and use your throttle much like a scooter does and as soon as you hear that that may

ruffle your feathers and you may think well I don't have a scooter and I have no reason to have an auto clutch. I think you're going to be surprised what you hear today about auto clutch systems or automatic transmissions on motorcycles of just what you can do with these things

and how they make a professional rider even better and how pros are riding with them and why.
