Summary

Our second reading today is taken from Paul’s first letter to the Thessalonians—and it always takes my breath away. He says, “Rejoice always. Pray without ceasing. In all circumstances give thanks.” For Paul, the coming of Jesus changed everything. His dying and rising turned everything upside down, so that the usual ways of thinking and acting are not longer valid. Grace has transfigured nature—and the three recommendations he gives are signs of this transfiguration.

before, I think the first letter of Paul to the Thessalonians is the earliest

Christian text we have written sometime around the year 50. I mean maybe Paul

1:06.1

wrote other letters that were lost, but this is the earliest one we've got. So

1:10.2

think of all of Christian literature from this time until you know yesterday.

1:15.2

This is the first text we have. And so it's have extraordinary importance and

1:20.6

interest I think. What we're reading from today is the very end of the letter.

1:26.4

So Paul's summary statement. And here's what he says in this massively important

1:33.6

early text. He tells the little Christian community, rejoice always, pray

1:41.7

without ceasing in all circumstances. Give thanks. Now, St. Paul is not

1:52.2

exactly known for his measured and moderate statements. You know, he's one of

1:56.6

these people that tends to go over the top. He says things very strongly. But

2:01.2

you know, even for Paul, these statements are extraordinary. I mean, look, I
