Summary

In our third devotional in this week-long series on the marks of a true Christian, today we’re going to explore together what it means to rejoice in hope. In a world that can so often bring us down, so often appear to be without hope, today we have the opportunity to make room for God to give us his perspective, that we might rejoice in his hope. May God give us wisdom, joy, and eternal perspective today as we make space for him to fill.

Our Scripture for today comes from Romans 12:12, and today's worship is Living Hope by Phil Wickham.

Live a life marked by faith.

The Bible has so much to say about our faith. And if I’m being honest, a lot of it is really confusing.

In Matthew 21 Jesus tells us that we’ll receive anything we ask for, if we have faith. Hebrews 11 tells us that it’s impossible to please God if we don’t have faith. 2 Corinthians 5 tells us that it is by faith that we “see” the path forward, and not with our physical sight.

But when I look into my own heart, I come face to face with ways I doubt on a daily basis.

I often trust in my own strength, lean on my own understanding, and seek to provide for myself with my own power rather than relying on the strength, empowering, and provision of God.

But, I also know that simply trying to have more faith doesn’t work either.

This is why I wrote a four-week devotional, Faith, to unpack what the Bible says about living a life marked by an authentic faith.

Faith isn’t something we muster up on our own. It’s not something we produce or create. Faith is the natural response to seeing, experiencing, and believing in God’s faithfulness.

And the pathway to greater faith is greater experience, greater understanding, and a true heart-knowledge of God’s faithfulness to us that guides our thoughts, emotions, and actions.

We've launched Volume 6 of our First15 Devotional Series, Faith, created to guide you into transformative experiences with God’s faithfulness and empower you to start living a life marked by authentic faith.

Our verse for today comes from Romans 12, verse 12, where Paul writes, rejoice and hope,

1:00.5

be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer. We are not promised a life without

1:10.8

struggle here on earth. In fact, the Bible makes it clear that the world will hate us for

1:18.3

our love of Jesus. John 15, 18 through 19 says, if the world hates you, know that it

1:26.5

has hated me before it hated you. If you were of the world, the world would love you

1:32.3

as its own, but because you were not of the world, but I chose you out of the world.

1:39.3

Therefore the world hates you. Jesus even promises us in John 1633 that in the world you

will have tribulation. Except John, each disciple was martyred for his faith in Christ, and

John was exiled to the prison island of Patmos for preaching that Jesus is God. We live in

an imperfect world, wrought with the destruction sin and separation from God has caused. You

here on earth, it's interesting that Paul would write in Romans 12, 12, rejoice and hope,

2:29.9

be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer. Paul knew all too well the trials we

to rejoice in hope. Along with promising us tribulation, scripture speaks of the perspective

we as believers are to have in light of our restored relationship with God. Hebrews 13
