Summary

Like most of the prophets, Zephaniah trades in a fair amount of doom and gloom—but he also dreams of the great day of victory and vindication. The Apostle Paul—the former rabbi Shaul, who had studied the prophets and their works under the great teacher Gamaliel—came to see that in the Paschal Mystery, in the dying and rising of Jesus, the totality of Zephaniah’s message was realized. The destruction that Zephaniah and the others foresaw came massively true in the destruction of Christ’s body on the cross. However, having gone all the way down, God in Christ brought the human race all the way up. Therefore, rejoice!

you to join Bishop Robert Barron as he preaches the gospel and shares the

Anyway, it itself that's kind of interesting to think about is you can't really

0:57.1

command feelings, can you? I can't tell you to feel a certain way. The fact that

1:07.4

wants us to get really tuned into the very profound truth being conveyed in

1:14.2

these readings. Our first reading is from the prophet Zefania. Now he's someone

1:20.4

from whom we rarely hear during the liturgical year. Older Catholics, by the way,

1:26.0

might recognize his name as Sofronius. If you look at some of the older versions

1:30.4

of the Catholic Bible, but Zefania, who was he? He was an older contemporary,

1:37.0

slightly older contemporary of the prophet Jeremiah. He was operating during the

1:42.4

reign of the righteous King Josiah. It's interesting, of course, most kings of

1:47.0

Israel. Let's face it. And of Judah are pretty bad. Josiah is one of the rare

1:52.2

righteous kings. And during his time Zefania is writing, this means in the

years just before the Babylonian captivity. So just before one of the greatest
