These are the kind of dark and sensational headlines that fuel tabloid news.

But the real story, tragic as it is, this isn't about celebrity, this is about family, and it's

about mental health.

Only a tragic combination of severe mental, emotional, and behavioral breakdowns can drive a child

to kill his or her parents. And there is a name for this, sadly. It occurs enough that it has got a

name, and it's called parasite. Now, an important clarification that I just really need to make here,

mental illness does not mean

violence. Millions of people live with serious mental health diagnoses and never hurt anyone.

But untreated or destabilized mental illness, especially when warning signs are ignored,

can, in some cases, rarely lead to the unthinkable.

Now, parricide clearly is unthinkable.

It is one of the rarest crimes. In the United States, it accounts for roughly 2 to 2.5% of all homicides.

And that is rare.

But let me tell you, when it happens in someone's family, it's 100% for them, and it is devastating.

And it violates the most basic human bond.
