Summary

The word “organic” is familiar to a lot of consumers -- in the last decade we’ve seen a rise in organic foods in our grocery stores and markets. And there’s a whole raft of standards, developed by federal regulators, that farmers have to meet in order to certify as organic. That kind of check list does not exist for food grown according to “regenerative” principles, which are gaining traction in conservation circles. Field Work hosts Mitchell Hora and Zach Johnson talk to Eric Jackson from Pipeline Foods and Sara Harper from Grounded Growth about the differences, markets and challenges of regenerative and organic practices.

rather than using some of the chemistry used in broader scale agriculture today.

There's a lot of regulation around it and a lot of investment in those supply chains.

And of course, farmers are getting paid a premium for those crops.

Yeah, and when it comes to regenerative, regenerative is maybe a newer concept that really

is looking deeper at soil health and things like organic carbon, water management.

1:21.8

It really takes a more holistic look at farming as it relates to the broader environment.

1:27.8

You know, unlike organic, it's almost more of a philosophy than a prescribed set of practices.

1:33.6

Yeah, and there's definitely some overlap between the two, and there's actually a regenerative

1:38.1

organic standard, but organic is much more of a known, you know, known system in the consumer's mind.

1:45.7

But today on the show, we're going to look out whether food grown regeneratively

1:49.7

could ever compete with organics in the supply chain and with the consumer.

1:55.1

Well, luckily, to get into this conversation deeper, Mitchell, we have two experts joining us today.
