Rates of the skin cancer melanoma have climbed alarmingly in recent years, particularly among young people.

Regrettably, medical therapies for the disease have not kept pace and in some countries

melanoma is a top 10 cause of death from cancer.

But more recently, cancer doctors like Massachusetts General Hospitals to Howard Kaufman

have begun to develop treatments that use a patient's own immune system to

attack their disease. The immune system protects our body from foreign invaders such as bacteria

and viruses but it can also recognize damaged or injured cells and so when a

cell becomes a cancer cell the immune system can tag it and in some cases it can

destroy it. The problem is that cancers carry inbuilt mechanisms to deflect the

immune system so that they can grow unhindered. And so, to be successful, a therapy needs to somehow surmount this natural
