Summary

Reformed and catholic - how so?No better place to meet Scott Swain for this conversation than Disney’s castle in Orlando. He usually finds inspiration there for his theological writing - I bet you didn’t know that!Scott makes the remarkable claim that in order to be truly protestant, we have to be good catholics in some sense. But don’t get worked up!He talks doctrinal development and Sola Scriptura, Augustine’s understanding of faith and reason, Thomas Aquinas’ view of the role and the relationship between theology and philosophy, and when the Protestant theological method of interpretation became distinct from the Catholic method. Can or should Protestants still be drawing from Aquinas? How has this Roman Catholic theologian and philosopher influenced even our Reformed confession of faith? You might be surprised to learn the practical implications of it all in the private and communal life of Christians and in discipleship. So join us!Also, Baker Academic has gifted some copies of Reformed Catholicity and we’re giving them away. I'm Amy Bird and super excited as I'm here today with Todd Pruitt and Carl Truman.

0:52.2

That's exciting enough.

0:53.1

And we have a guest that is calling in all the way from the castle in Disneyland.

1:00.5

He is Dr. Scott Swain, president and professor of systematic theology at RTS Orlando.

1:07.8

And we are super excited to talk to him today.

1:09.8

Hey, Scott, how are you doing?

1:10.9

I'm doing well, but I do need to correct you, Amy. I'm calling from Disney World.

1:15.0

Oh, I knew I said it wrong. I always get those mixed up. Yeah. But we're recording in Chucky

1:19.8

cheese. Yeah, we're in Chucky Cheese and Disney World and Disneyland. It's like the same

1:24.9

difference to us. Amy lived in West Virginia for a long time, so that has to factor in as well.

1:30.3

I don't know about these refined castles and all that. So today we want to talk to you about

1:34.3

your book, Reformed Catholicity, that you co-wrote with Michael Allen. And maybe you could

1:40.5

just kind of unpack this title for us because it's a book that I recommend

1:45.2

often. I really love this book and the whole idea behind it, but I find that the title kind of

1:52.4

confuses people sometimes. So what does it mean to be reformed and then why are you calling it

1:58.6

reformed Catholicity? Yeah, great question.

2:01.8

So the book is trying to contribute in a small way to the renewal of theology and biblical interpretation

2:11.4

by helping contemporary Protestants be more truly Protestant.
