I have some Alex Smith news to start the show.

Yesterday on the show, I referenced and discussed J.P. Finley's story on NBC Sports

Washington about the nuclear option for Alex Smith, which would be to cut him now,

take a $50 million plus cap hit in 2019, and be free and clear of his deal and all the remaining

guaranteed money with respect to the salary cap starting in 2020.

I was told last night from a source that the Redskins are not even

remotely considering this as an option. And in fact, they are more likely to restructure Alex

Smith's deal, to push or spread out the guaranteed money remaining on his deal to later years

in his contract or perhaps over a longer period

of time with an extended contract, which would lessen the cap hit in the next few years.

It would extend a significant portion of the remaining guaranteed money out into the future

where the expectation is that the NFL salary cap is going to continue to grow.

And on a per team basis, they would be able to, you know, make it less painful down the road,

taking the majority of the hit down the road.

Also, it was pointed out to me that there could be an opportunity that's even better down the road with a potential lockout or a new CBA in 2021.

Now, we know what happened the last time there was a lockout in 2011.

That led to the salary cap penalty with what the Redskins tried to do.

And I still have a problem with the league penalizing the Redskins for what they did in 2011.

It was not.
