Summary

Welcome to the latest episode of The Overlap’s football history podcast, It Was What It Was.

This week we have a two part special focussing on Liverpool’s 1984 European Cup victory, 40 years on from one of the finest nights in the Reds' history.

Journalists Jonathan Wilson and Rob Draper discuss the events leading up to the final where Joe Fagan’s side beat Roma in their own stadium as they lifted their fourth European Cup in seven years having already won the league title and league cup in the same season.

In part one Jonathan and Rob explore where Liverpool were as a club and city along with reliving famous knockout stage contests, including dramatic wins over Benfica and Dinamo Bucuresti where tempers flared on and off the pitch.

Join us for part two on Thursday 30th May to listen to the historical European Cup final where Liverpool became the first side to win the final on penalties.

It was frightening how much those fans wanted Roma to win that much.

0:11.0

It put fear into me.

Well, this is it was what it was.

I'm Rob Drape. I'm here of Jonathan Wilson.

And that quote is from the great defender, Alan Hansen.

Normally a man with a cool head in difficult circumstances, but he's talking about going to Rome

0:28.6

in 1984 for the European Cup final, what we'd now call the Champions League final with Liverpool,

0:34.3

for a match that many people regard as one of the finest ever achievement

0:45.2

home because of the quirk away, UAF, organise these fixtures and into an incredibly hostile

0:51.0

environment, they go away and they win on penalties. And today we're going

0:55.5

to be examining the story of that because we've reached, we realize, much to our alarm, 40 years

1:02.1

since that day, given that we both would have watched that game on television. It's a 40th

1:06.4

anniversary this year of an epic match. And that is Hansen was had tuned into the television

1:14.8

about a few hours before the game in his hotel room and he sees the stadium and he sees it's

1:20.9

already two-thirds full and the fans are going absolutely crazy. And it's at that point he realizes

1:26.6

that this is going to be a test

1:28.4

like none other before and just to contextualize that which jonathan's about to do i mean this is a

1:33.0

hugely experienced defender liverville had been all around europe they had experienced

1:37.1

hostile environment after hostile environment which is much more the way in those days but this

1:43.5

is something else.

1:44.8

So Jonathan, perhaps you can put this into some context of build up to the match
