do you do As Christians, we're supposed to stand out or stand apart from the surrounding culture.

So what exactly does that look like, following Christ

and obeying God's commands? As we'll find out today on Truth for Life it

involves more than simply attending church every week.

I invite you to turn with me to the Book of Nehemiah in the Old Testament.

Naya chapter 10, where our focus this morning is on the truth which emerges from the 30th verse and as

something of a cross reference let me read in your hearing you needn't turn to it

these familiar words from Ephesians chapter six children obey your parents in the

Lord for this is right honor your father mother, which is the first commandment with a promise

that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.

Fathers do not exasperate your children instead bring them up in the training and instruction of

the Lord.

We had begun to lay down these foundational statements that when the word of God is obeyed from the heart,

first of all, it will realign the focus of those who obey it. And we said that in the realigning of focus, they had

begun to think in terms of God's purposes as opposed to their preferences.

They had begun to think in terms of their responsibilities as opposed to their

rights, and they had in turn begun to think of the long-term effect as opposed to short-term enjoyment. Now each of these things has to be
