Let's dive into God's word this morning. This is Romans chapter 3 that we've been studying.

We're down to verses 22, 23, 24, right in that area, and we're talking about a very big Bible word today, but it's a word that you

hear in our culture in other contexts.

You hear people say he needs an opportunity to redeem himself. What do we mean when we say that?

Well we're talking usually about a situation where someone has failed at something

or they've proven themselves to be unreliable or untrustworthy.

And we're saying he really needs an opportunity where he can prove to himself and to others that he's better than that.

He can do better than he did before.

We talk about redemption in that context in our world. But that is not the biblical view

of redemption. The Apostle Paul has just told us that there is nothing we can do by way of good works to redeem ourselves if we are in a state of needing redemption.

And Paul has also told us we are all in that state of needing

redemption when it comes to our relationship to the God of the

He is so far above us, so set apart from us, that there is nothing we can do to bridge

the chasm between him and us. Redemption has to come in some other way.
